The remodeled kitchen from the 1970's was riddled with poor craftsmanship and poor design. The kitchen lacked storage, counter space and quality materials. The existing framing was inadequate to meet current local building codes. Special care needed to be taken during the demolition to ensure any historical artifacts from Al Capone were preserved and given to the homeowners. It was impossible to utilize the overall floor space due to oversized windows. The owners didn't use the kitchen for entertaining because it lacked the character found in the rest of their home. The details of the kitchen are kept simple to replicate the details of this historical home. The large walk-in pantry also provided an additional opportunity to conceal several modern amenities, including the microwave, the wall oven and warming drawer.
