Interior Design: Design Theory 19 - Wausau
This 100-year-old farmhouse was transformed through a full remodel into a contemporary home that honors its history while embracing modern living. Soft, whimsical lines create a sense of flow throughout the home, enhancing both the visual aesthetic and the overall experience of the space. A primary goal was to create large, open gathering areas, particularly between the kitchen and great room. A seamless transition between these spaces supports everyday living and entertaining, while a statement fireplace and calming water feature serve as striking focal points. A cohesive palette of colors, textures, and materials ties the home together, with layered finishes adding warmth and depth. Custom details, including a one-of-a-kind railing, contribute originality and architectural character, while modern conveniences such as automated shades and durable, pet-friendly materials enhance functionality and comfort. Thoughtfully designed and expertly executed, this project balances beauty and practicality, creating a timeless, welcoming home that is both visually impactful and tailored to modern lifestyles.

Practical touches—a wall-mounted smart toilet, cabinetry drawers, and dedicated hooks for towels and robes—make daily use as seamless as the room's visual impact. This is not simply a bathroom. It is a showstopper.
Green/Energy-Efficient Home: P.E.A. Builders - muskego, wi
The homeowners' prior health concerns guided material selection throughout and standard practices were elevated with low-toxicity solutions including Marmoleum flooring, prefinished engineered wood flooring, and full maple cabinetry assembled with no-added-chemical adhesives. Mold-retardant paint was applied in the garage and shed, and job site cleanliness was a priority from start to finish. Every P.E.A. Builders home also includes an air exchanger delivering fresh air approximately four times per day. Site decisions supported the homeowners' goal of preserving a natural backyard habitat, with a deck offering direct ground access and an attached shed oriented toward the yard for easy gardening storage. Energy performance is driven by a Tier 1 hybrid wall system achieving R-26 to R-28, complemented by R-65 attic insulation and foundation foam under slab and exterior. LP SmartSide engineered wood siding adds long-term durability. The all-electric home is powered by an 8 kW grid-tied solar system, and third-party testing by a certified energy rater earned a HERS Index of 23—approximately 53.5% more efficient than current Wisconsin code.

A curated mix of materials—tile and quartz backsplash, white oak hardwood flooring, brass hardware, and checkered porcelain tile in the entry—honors the home's character while feeling fresh. Specialty cabinetry integrates pull-out spice organizers, concealed paper towel storage, appliance garages, and wine cubbies for seamless, thoughtful functionality throughout.
Landscaping/curb appeal: alt’s operation - verona, wi
This double-lot project transformed a sloped property into a resort-style outdoor living environment balancing recreation, relaxation, and entertainment. Significant elevation changes were addressed with engineered limestone retaining walls, integrated stair systems, and terraces that organize the property into distinct yet unified zones: a custom in-ground pool, expansive patios, a full-size pickleball court, and a covered pavilion with fireplace and entertainment. Architectural integration was central—limestone walls complement the home's stone veneer, stamped concrete echoes its warm tones, and the pavilion's stonework and wood-paneled ceiling mirror interior elements, creating seamless continuity between indoors and out. The pavilion serves as a true outdoor living room for multi-season use, the pool patio accommodates intimate and large-scale gatherings, and the pickleball court adds active recreation without disrupting aesthetic balance. Integrated lighting extends usability into the evening. Rather than concealing elevation changes, terracing was embraced as a design asset—adding dimension and purposeful space definition. Every detail was executed with craftsmanship and longevity in mind. What was once a sloped, undeveloped double lot is now a highly functional retreat that elevates both the property's livability and its overall appeal.
